The controversial Bangladeshi media mogul owning couple of private television channels namely ATN-Bangla and ATN-News, whose name came in connection to the murder of journo couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi has filled bankruptcy petition in United States, where, in past few decades, he built Business Empire worth few hundred million dollars. It was not clear as to how Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman, chairman of ATN-Bangla and ATN-News shifted such huge sum of money to United States, while foreign exchange control department at Bangladesh Bank confirms that no application for transferring money abroad were submitted either by Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman or any of his business enterprises.
Most of the business ventures of Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman in United States are jointly operated by his associate named Bhuiyan M.J. Panir or Bhuyian M.J. Panir. He first entered United States with a Bangladeshi passport, where his date of birth was mentioned as October 6, 1960 and after he was deported by the authorities for illegal stay, he managed a second passport in Bangladesh under the name of Mohammad Siddiqui, where his date of birth was mentioned as January 1, 1969. According to existing law of Bangladesh, carrying two different passports with two different dates of birth are punishable crime, while it also goes against the existing immigration law of the United States. According to public record available with the United States authorities, Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman and Mohammad Siddiqui jointly own the following companies in United States [each of the names will lead to links, where necessary information is available]:
